The simpsons have been known for doing satires out of everything, literally. In the episode "Whacking Day" they are doing a satire of a story called "The Lottery" a story about a tradition in a town, in which the one who wins the lottery would be killed, it would be an honor to day in that way. In the simpsons, they would kill snakes with a stick also in tradition. They are similar because they both are doing this as a tradition but not knowing why this tradition started in the first place. In "Whacking day" they are making fun of "The Lottery" making it horation, while "The Lottery" its juvenalian because the actions in the satire are violent. I think the authors of the Simpsons did this to show how it actually stupid its to follow a tradition just because.
